Is anyone out there?

I sure hope that I am doing this right. I have not recieved any posts to any of my comments and am afraid it may be too late for me.  I have enjoyed every minute of this class.  There have been many stars and hardly any wishes since I am learning about different methods and styles of teaching.  I am anxious to know more about the strategies of diversity in a classroom.
With the practicum at Apache, there are students that are not aware of the importance of education.  It must begin from the home and most of these students do not have a place to call home or even a family.  It is truly a sad situation.  Please if anyone can answer my post, I would be happy and I promise I will respond back.http://unm-elds.blogspot.com/

I Am Poem

Hello everyone!  I am finally at my blogpost.  I am going to catch up with all of my thoughts and questions within the last few weeks that we have had class and procticums.  I am excited for the "My Hero" project with the fourth graders.  the students may not seem excited right now, but I feel that they will come around once they have their hero in place.  As for the students that I am coaching, they have so many stories and so I am confident that we will all have a fun , learning experience.
Harriet Tubman's visit was wonderful, the students had plenty of questions for her and my group wanted to ask her more, I related the questions to what they had to do with their hero so I thought the hook of it all was great.  It is sad to hear some of their stories because I can understand if their homelife is miserable and finding a hero is like asking for a miracle.  In our wrap up discussion periods after our visits with the class, I enjoy sharing our experiences with my peers.  It truly is helpful in solving problems and working together as a team.  So far, so good with my team of students and looking forward to working with them this week.

Revision of the last sentence

Goodness, correction on the last sentence of "Your Hero" I meant to say, the reason that you chose that particular person as your hero.  I said it wrong by saying NOT YOUR HERO.  Sorry

Writer's Recipe

Today was a great day for sharing!  I had a lot of notes and my favorite metaphor for our project was baking the "Hero Cake" so I called it.  Francis's question was, "So how are you all doing with the ingredients that you have gathered so far from our little cooks,(4th graders)?"  Here is how she catergoized the process:
  • We have just added the ingredients and stirring up the ideas
  • We still have to taste the batter to know if we need to add more ingredients to acquire the flavorful batter?
  • Lastly, and important, if it looks and tastes right, "How are we going to bake it?"
It is so true that like baking, writing is a process and is not perfected the first time around.  We are always taste testing to find that delicious flavor of the finished product.  Loved this connection!
Another important topic was the bad and sad memories of the heroes that our little fellows have selected.  How do we deal with their stories?  I like how it was suggested that these memories are a gift and that by sharing them, we all take part of the special gift and the story does become more meaningful to our student.
One more topic was the sharing of personal events in our lives as coaches, do we share and how much of it do we share for example;  alcohol or drug use that our hero may have used.  The answer is important and that was to use common sense by selecting only what a child that age could understand.  The lesson learned from the dramatic moments so that there is a reason that person is not "Your Hero."  Excellent day!http://unm-elds.blogspot.com/
